England confirm Tariq Lamptey is considering Black Stars approach
Head coach of England’s U-21 side, Lee Carsley, has confirmed Tariq Lamptey has been approached by the Ghana Football Association over the possibility of playing for the Black Stars.
The British-born Ghanaian youngster has been mentioned in the last few months as a Black Stars target ahead of the 2022 FIFA World Cup.
Lamptey has represented England at youth levels but the Brighton & Hove Albion right-back is yet to earn a call-up to the senior team.
The 21-year-old was not named in England’s U-21 team for the upcoming international break and Carsley confirmed the decision to leave out the player was to give him time to decide on his international future after being approach by Ghana.
“There’s an issue over his [Tariq Lamptey] dual nationality. He’s had an approach [from Ghana]. It’s something he’s considering at the minute,” Carsley said as quoted by The Sun Newspaper.
“He’s asked to be left out of the squad for a bit of headspace. He’s not switched, it’s not cemented or anything like that. But he’s had an approach [from Ghana], we have to respect that.
“We’ve made it clear how important we see him to us. I know the seniors have as well. It’s not something that we’ve given up on. Tariq is fully aware of how important we see him,” he added.
With Ghana’s quest to create a good impression after securing qualification to the World Cup, the addition of Lamptey could be a major boost.
