Nurses, Midwives Lose Trust In GRNMA Leadership

Mr Agyeman Prempeh, President of the Union of Professional Nurses and Midwives Ghana (UPNMG), Ashanti Region Chapter, has disclosed that the union had come at the time nurses and midwifes across the country, have lost trust in the leadership of Ghana Registered Nurses and Midwives Association (GRNMA).

According to him, the union has come to stay and will continue to thrive in all the sixteen regions of Ghana, in spite of the attempt by some people to suppress its existence.

However, the Ashanti Region has been outstanding and he credited the executives for their tireless efforts to go to all the corners of the region to sell flagships policies to Nurses and Midwives.

Speaking at a forum held on Saturday, June 11, 2022 at CLOGSAG Hall in Kumasi to interact with the regional executives, Mr Prempeh said, nothing can derail the progress of the union; as he charged the executives to continue their good works and market the union to colleague nurses and midwives at other health facilities.

He advised members to disregard any irresponsible statements from some colleagues who do not want to accept the existence of UPNMG and have been trying so hard, to suppress the union.

He recalled the early days of UPNMG when some opponents have tagged it with all sort of denigrating names such as faceless associations just to prevent others from joining the union.

However, he said today same people have now come back and now address UPNMG as a registered Labour union.

Mr Prempeh commended the Ashanti Region chapter of the union for its outstanding performance, especially the executives for their tireless efforts to go all the corners of the region to sell flagships policies of the union to colleague nurses and midwives.

He mentioned for example, UPNMG mutual fund loans, hire purchase/ credit mall and free life insurance for subscribers as the first ever policies enjoy by Nurses and Midwives in Ghana and these are the bedrock of the UPNMG.

Let the echo hear that very soon members will see another three major policies of UPNMG coming into operation,” he said, adding that, he cannot imagine how Nurses and Midwives are going to embrace these policies.

Mr Prempeh has therefore, advised members to work on their credibility to projects their development and human relationship as well as desist from irresponsible statements.

He explained that, nursing is a profession with a code of ethics and professional responsibilities, because one major responsibility of a nurse or midwife is trustworthy.

According to him, there are many instances some colleagues forget this code of ethics and find themselves in shameful acts just for personal interest.

Mr Agyeman Prempeh also touched on the issues of nurses leaving the country for greener pastures.

According to him, the menace is of major concern and he would have wished President Akufo-Addo looked into the matter with all the attention it deserves.

He said, the government can follow the example of what countries like Kenya, Zimbabwe and others have done by signing a partnership with other governments to supply them with Nurses.

He also addressed their members on the Labour Act 2003 And Labour Regulations 2007.

He bemoaned that, nurses and midwives do not spend time on reading materials outside the profession and this has contributed to their lack of understanding of the ACT and its regulation and this has made some to think that they are tired of the association.

Meanwhile, in a bit to increase membership across the region, the leadership has started visiting the various district health directories to meet with the health directors and the core management team to introduce the union and executives to them to pave way for the executive to visit health facilities in the district.

This exercise, he said, began in March this years and places such as Adansi South, Adansi Asokwa, Bosomtwe, Bekwai, Adansi North, Obuasi Municipal, Obuasi East, Amansie Central Sekyere Central, Atwima Mponua, Kwanwoma and others have been visited.
