12 Killed In Elmina-Komenda Accident; As 30 Herdsmen, Cattle Clash In E/R
At least, twelve persons have been killed in an accident at Eduagyei on the Elmina -Komenda junction road, in the Central Region.
According to the Police, the 12 persons died when a Toyota Hiace bus with registration number WR 1347- 17, they were travelling on, collided head-on with a DAF Truck with registration number GM 2570-12
The dead include 5 females and 7 males. Their bodies have been deposited at the Cape Coast Teaching Hospital Morgue for autopsy.
Multiple media reports indicate that the bus was travelling from Kumasi to Takoradi in the Western Region.
According to the 3news report sighted by The Anchor, the passengers died instantly on Wednesday afternoon, August 3, when their bus collided head-on with the truck loaded with cement.
Eye-witnesses accounts said that the DAF Truck was overtaking other vehicles at a point on the highway engulfed in smoke, due to a near-by bush burning.
Richard Karikari, narrated that the truck driver, who took to his heels after the accident, may have been blinded by the smoke.
He is said to have run his truck straight into the Takoradi-bound bus, which had 12 passengers aboard.
The only survivor, a female, is said to have been rushed to the Cape Coast Teaching Hospital for emergency care.
The Elmina Command of the Motor Transport and Traffic Directorate (MTTD) of Ghana Police, immediately deployed officers to the scene to ensure free flow of traffic.
30 Herdsmen Involved In Accident
In a related-development, Starrfm.com.gh correspondent in the Eastern region, Kojo Ansah reports that over 30 herdsmen transporting cattle in a truck from Akateng in Upper ManyaKrobo to Ashaiman in the Greater Accra Region, have been involved in a near fatal accident.
The accident occurred Wednesday August 3,2022 at around 5:00pm.
The herdsmen, mostly, fulanis and their cattle, were on board the Asia Truck with registration number GG 979-21.
Descending towards the accident prone Asitey junction-sharp curve stretch of the Otorkpolu to Odumase highway, the vehicle allegedly suffered a sudden tyre burst and as a result, the driver lost control of the steering wheel, causing the vehicle to somersault before crashing at the roadside.
About 29 of the herdsmen sustained severe to critical injuries. Some of the cattle died and others injured.
The driver and two others, however, escaped unhurt.
The human victims were rescued and rushed to the St Martins Deporres Hospital at Agormanya.
The medical Director Dr. Stephen Kusi and the medical team on duty provided emergency services to the victims.
