NDC Chairman Escapes Assassination Attempt

The Greater Accra Regional Chairman of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) has escaped an alleged assassination attempt on his life on Sunday night, February 26, 2023.

Emmanuel NiiAshie Moore is said to have escaped the attack when the unknown assailants broke into his apartment and ransacked the entire room.

Reports indicate the incident occurred at his office at Teshie – First Junction in Accra, where he sometimes takes a nap while resting.

But the former Member of Parliament (MP) for Adenta Constituency, who confirmed the incident in a Facebook, post sighted by The Anchor, said that the Sunday attack was the third attempt to kill him.

According to him, there have been previous attempts to end his life after the NDC’s regional electionsin November, last year.

“Yesterday was the third attempt to assassinate me after our NDC GAR Regional elections. Thank God I changed my sleeping location again,” he wrote.

He also quoted Romans 8:38-39, saying “For I am convinced that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor rulers, nor things present, nor things to come, nor powers, nor height, nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord.”

Pictures of the incident shared by the politician showed the main entrance of the room with security door and the frames badly damaged, computers destroyed, office wardrobes ransacked and files and other documents scattered on the floor.

Meanwhile, the displaced staff who work closely with Mr. Ashie Moore told Citi News that a laptop belonging to the regional chairman was stolen and other properties were vandalized.

An accounts officer at the office, Albert Lutterodt, said the incident came as a shock to residents in the area and the staff.

“We came to work at exactly 8 am today, and we realized the whole place had been messed up. The accounts office and the cashier’s office were forcefully opened. They entered Ashie Moore’s main officeto steal his laptop. They have destroyed everything.”

Mr. Lutterodt also disclosed that the police have launched an investigation into the events.

“The Police are looking into the matter. We have not been allowed inside to touch anything. We the staff are standing right in front of the office in shock. We are all worried. Luckily Mr. Ashie Moore tells me he was not around when the thugs came,” he added.

Internal Brawl

It is unclear, if the incident has any link to the internal wrangling of the party in the region, which was supposedly resolved, according to recent report.

Mr.NiiAshie Moore was recently elected as the Greater Accra Regional NDCchairman, after he surprisingly defeated the then incumbent chairman.

Ashie Moore polled 327 votes to topple Joseph Ade Coker, who polled 222 votes,in the regional executives’ election held at the Tema Sports Stadium.

But since his election, Chairman Ashie Moore and theRegional Secretary, Theophilus Tetteh Chaie, and his deputy have not been in good terms, leading to a free-for-all fight at the regional office recently and causing the party to be in disarray.

This is as a result of the two secretaries’ alleged efforts to stop anti-party movement by their attackers, Mr.Ashie Moore and one Nii Okai Laryea, a former MP for Amasaman, to circumvent the party rules in favour of their cronies and themselves.

For his inability to stand the assault anymore, Tetteh Chaie has been compelled to petition the National Chairman and the Parliamentary caucus, among others, on the conduct of the regional chairman, which he described as contrary to laid-down party procedures and which, if not addressed immediately, will lead to disunity and lack of cohesion and therefore mar the efforts of the party in consolidating the gains made by the Greater Accra Regional NDC in the last elections.

In the petition, dated January 11, 2023, Tetteh Chaie stated that “The Regional Chairman Ashie Moore disregarded my advice not to circumvent the already laydown party guidelines for the Constituency elections in the case of Amasaman.

“He disregarded the suspension of the former Constituency Chairman (Kofi Zoryiku) by the then General Secretary of the party by reinstating him and including him in the election processes although he had not gone through the election procedures. He also included Mr. Thompson an aspirant who was disqualified per the mandatory disqualification in the guideline and whom a petition had been brought against.”

According to the regional secretary, the regional chairman did this with the connivance of Nii Okai Laryea and some of the regional executives.
