N/R: Samira Bawumia launches second phase of SDP in Saboba

The second phase of the ‘Safe Delivery Project’ (SDP) has been launched in the Saboba District of the Northern region.

The first phase of the SDP was launched in the East and North East Gonja Districts of the Savannah Region in the last five years.

The SDP project which is a Samira Empowerment and Humanitarian Projects (SEHP), was launched by the wife of Vice-President, Samira Bawumia.

The SDP project is geared towards reducing maternal and neonatal mortality while increasing skilled delivery through the provision of well-resourced birth kits to expectant mothers during their third trimester to enable them have a safe delivery and take proper care of the babies after birth.

According to the Ghana Health Service (GHS) data, the Saboba District has one of the worst Maternal Mortality Rates (MMR), thus, the SEHP seeks to address the challenge through the SDP just like it was done in the East Gonja District.

Mrs Bawumia thanked the East Gonja District Health Directorate, for its commitment and support.

Through the SDP, the district which initially had the highest MMR in Ghana recorded zero MMR, as of the end of 2020, per the GHS’ data, with significantly increased antenatal visits.

Mrs Bawumia also donated various medical supplies and equipment to the Saboba District Health Directorate to support healthcare delivery in the district.

She also expressed appreciation to the Paramount Chief of the Saboba Traditional Area, Uchabobor Mater Bowan John Sakojim IV; the Member of Parliament (MP) for Gushegu, Hassan Tampuli; the Saboba Health Directorate, and all those who supported the launch of the programme.
