Police Arrests Self-Confessed ‘Robbery Gang’

…But Suspects Say They Spoke Under Influence Of ‘Apio’ a.k.a ‘Sobabi’

The Ghana Police Service, has confirmed the arrest of some four young men seen in a viral video, confessing to be armed robbers.

Interestingly, hours before their arrest, the young men hurriedly released another video to undo the harm they had caused for themselves, claiming they spoke under the influence of alcohol at the time of making the first video.

The suspects, who called themselves ‘Night Hunters’ and also threatened to harm anyone they come across at night, were picked on Friday, July 12, 2024.

The suspects, whose names were given as, Isaac Ampong alias Bullet, Emmanuel Buah alias Network, Festus Agyei, and Asaana Isaac, according to the police, are currently in police custody assisting with investigation.

The confession video, which was shared on social media channel, Tiktok, had garnered several views and reactions, with many followers, warning them about the impact of what they had done.

But according to the suspects, they are not known to be armed robbers, contrary to what they confessed in the video and therefore, apologized to the public and the police to forgive them.

In their rebuttal video, they claimed they went for a birthday party and took in alcohol, which reason they spewed those words.

One of them said, even though his permission was sought before the video was posted, he did not know it will land them in trouble, adding that, at the time he was speaking in the video, he did not know what he was saying.

But, having watched the video and the calls they have been bombarded with, they have realized their mistake.

“Ghanaian, we have shared a video on the internet that we have regretted. We did not know it will cost us this much. At the time we had taken in alcohol, because we were coming from a birthday party, so we did the video under the influence of alcohol.

Everyone that knows us, is aware this is not who we are.  We did not know it will trend this way, but after it was shared on Tiktok, the calls we have received and after watching the video, we have come to the realization that, we did not behave well. So we are pleading with you. All who have watched the video, including bloggers we beg you”, one person said in Twi.

Another person also added, “We admit that we said it, but it was because we were drunk. We went to a birthday party and took in alcohol, don’t even know how to drink. My friend who posted the video told me the video was trending and I said ok. Then he came back telling me that his friend is telling him to delete it and I asked why? Then I went to look at and realized we did not speak well”.

We retract what we said. We plead with everyone, we plead with authorities on Tiktok, we plead with the police that are angry. We wanted to garner followers and trend. I have even been sick, I have not eaten and I am even feeling cold. We are kneeling down”, he said while  on their knees.

But their plea obviously has fallen on deaf ears, as ignorance of the law is no excuse.

They are currently in police custody and are assisting with the ongoing investigation.

In a statement, the Service assured the public that all suspects would be taken through the due process of law.

The authorities emphasised their commitment to maintaining public safety and ensuring that any threats to the community, are addressed promptly and effectively.

“We wish to assure the public that all the suspects will be taken through the due process of the law”, the police statement said.
