Bawumia Launches Electric Buses For Public Transport Tomorrow
The Vice President and flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, is set to launch the much-anticipated fleet of electric buses he promised for public transport, tomorrow Wednesday, November 27, 2024.
The ceremony, slated to take place at GAPTE RIIS, Adenta in Accra, is set to transform the transportation sector and significantly reduce commuting costs.
The launch, will serve as beginning of a significant milestone in Ghana’s efforts to transition towards environmentally friendly public transportation.
With the rolling out of this innovative measure, public transport fares, are expected to be slashed by approximately 40 percent.
For the first phase, there will be a deployment of 100 electric buses in major cities, including Accra, Kumasi and Tamale, where there are high levels of pollution from fossil fuel-powered vehicles
Government plans to increase the number to 500 buses within the next two years.
The buses are part of the Akufo-Addo’s government’s far-reaching plan, to reduce carbon emissions and promote sustainable energy solutions in the transport sector.
By integrating electric vehicles into the public transport system, Ghana, aims to align with global efforts to combat climate change.
According to reports, the initiative, is as a result of a collaborative effort between the government, the private sector stakeholders, and international partners.
Dr Bawumia, announced the electric bus initiative as a means to modernise public transportation and improve air quality in urban areas.
The buses, which are manufactured by leading companies in the electric vehicle industry, are equipped with advanced technology to ensure efficiency, comfort, and safety.
According to reports, government plans to build charging stations all around the country to support the network of electric buses, encouraging the expansion of the infrastructure needed for electric cars, training programmes and maintenance facilities.
According to the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the National Entrepreneurship and Innovation Programme (NEIP), Kofi Ofosu Nkansah, the new electronic buses, which are currently on their way to Ghana, are projected to cut down transportation expenses by as much as 40 percent.
The introduction of these electric buses, aligns with the government’s broader vision of promoting sustainable transport solutions, while addressing the challenges of traffic congestion and pollution.
Ofosu Nkransah, emphasized that the electronic buses, will not only enhance the efficiency of public transportation, but also contribute to a cleaner and greener environment in urban areas.
In addition to cost savings, the electronic buses, are expected to improve the overall commuting experience for passengers.
With modern amenities and reduced noise levels compared to traditional diesel buses, these vehicles, will provide a comfortable and eco-friendly alternative for daily travelers.
