Akatsi South Assembly Members Applaud Mahama’s Promise to Pay Allowances

Assembly Members of the Akatsi South Municipality have lauded the pledge by former President John Dramani Mahama to ensure that all Assembly Members across the country receive a structured monthly allowance.
In a statement signed by the Presiding Member, Mr. Ahiable Raphael Kofi, the Assembly Members expressed their appreciation for Mahama’s recognition of their role in grassroots governance and his commitment to addressing the financial constraints that have hindered their effectiveness.
“As representatives of our communities, we play a crucial role in governance, development planning, and policy implementation. However, the absence of a structured allowance has long been a major obstacle to our work,” the statement noted.
The Assembly Members believe that the fulfillment of Mahama’s promise will significantly enhance their ability to serve their communities. They outlined three key benefits of such a policy:
- Enhancing Effectiveness – A reliable allowance will enable them to execute their duties more diligently and engage better with their constituents.
- Improving Accountability – Financial support will allow for better oversight of development projects and transparency in local governance.
- Strengthening Decentralization – Supporting Assembly Members financially will reinforce the role of local government in national development and deepen participatory democracy.
Acknowledging concerns about constitutional provisions on Assembly Members’ emoluments, they emphasized that these issues can be addressed through constructive dialogue and policy adjustments.
“We call on all stakeholders—government, political parties, civil society organizations, and the general public—to support this initiative. Fair remuneration for Assembly Members is not just a political promise but a necessary step for effective service delivery at the local level,” the statement concluded.
The Assembly Members reaffirmed their dedication to serving the people of Akatsi South with diligence and integrity and vowed to continue advocating for policies that promote their welfare and community development.
