Central Region NDC Spits Venom, Says It Won’t Be Intimidated Ahead Of December Poll

The opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the Central Region, has served notice that the party, will resist any form of intimidation from their political opponents ahead of this year’s elections.

Regional Chairman, Professor Richard Asiedu at a news conference in Kasoa on Sunday, June 9, said no amount of intimidation or harassment, would deter the forward march of the party in wresting power from the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the December 7, poll.

“Ladies Gentleman, the NDC in Central Region which I lead is for peace but if the Ghana Police Service continues to look on unconcerned for evil to be perpetuated, we would also advise ourselves ahead of the December 7th polls. No Intimidation from the NPP will stop the wind of change blowing over the central region. We remain steadfast and resolute in winning and claiming the Presidential and Parliamentary polls for the NDC party”, he said.

Professor Richard Asiedu, who was flanked by the Parliamentary Candidate for Awutu Senya East, Mrs. Phillis Naa Koryoo and the Constituency Chairman, Stephen Agyare and other executives, listed series of incidents which he claimed were deliberately orchestrated by the NPP to disrupt and discourage NDC supporters from registering to vote.

According to him, the governing party, has engaged in intimidation tactics in the ongoing proxy application and voter transfer by the Electoral Commission (EC).

“This is a blatant attempt to undermine the democratic process and disenfranchise voters,” Prof. Asiedu said.

He said in Asikuma Odoben Brakwah Constituency, voters were lured and bused with financial inducements disguised as business loans and sent to Accra, stressing that the party is following up on the issue to identify the exact beneficiary constituency they were sent to.

He further alleged that, in Abura Asebu Kwamankese Constituency, their opponent is auditing the EC Register for dead persons to aide people to register as proxy voters during the election.

He encouraged residents, whose loved ones have died to visit the voter exhibition centers, when the exercise commences to prompt EC officials to strike out names of their deceased relatives.

In Effutu Constituency, Prof. Asiedu said, the Majority Leader and Member of Parliament (MP) for the area, Alexander Afenyo Markins, has allegedly bused men clad in military uniform to transfer their votes to Effutu, hence want the military hierarchy to probe the issue.

“We want the Ghana Armed Forces to investigate and come out with a response on these 71 men, since, the EC’s guidelines on voter transfer do not allow for such issues to be challenged. The tragedy of the Techiman South is fresh on our minds and the NDC will resist any military interventions that are not seconded or sanctioned by the military high command,” he said.

Reacting to allegations that the NDC is causing disruption and mayhem in Awutu Senya West Constituency, the Regional Chairman, described the assertions as unfounded and a diversionary tactics from the NPP in that constituency.

He disclosed that, it was an NPP activist by name Alex Acheampong, who rather attacked a certain NDC agent called Junior in the presence of the District Police Commander.

“These accusations are a desperate attempt to shift blame and distract us from the progress of work done,” he said, adding “Our party is committed to a peaceful and fair election process in Awutu Senya West.”

Touching on the recent arrest of NDC’s Parliamentary Candidate for Awutu Senya East and ongoing trial of Minority Leader, Dr Cassiel Ato Forson, the Regional Chairman, said the party in the region is not happy, describing the actions as persecution of their members.

“We are not happy as a region about the continuous deliberate persecution and evil orchestrations by the NPP government against our cherished members and we want to caution them to desist from such evil schemes or face the wrath of the party,” he cautioned.
