NPP Will Defend Members Against Any Attack –Youth Organiser
Mr Salem Mustapha, the National Youth Organiser of the New Patriotic Party, has called on former President John Mahama, the President elect, to instruct the supporters of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), to refrain from attacking collation centres and some state institutions.
He said, despite Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, the NPP flagbearer’s, show of admirable statesmanship by conceding defeat to Mr Mahama, 14 hours after close of polls to promote peace and unity, some NDC supporters, had resorted to looting state institutions and attacking homes of some NPP parliamentary candidates.
“The NPP demands that John Mahama immediately instruct his supporters to stand down and allow the EC to do its work,” Mr Mustapha said.
Addressing a news conference in Accra on Monday, Mr Mustapha, warned that continued provocations and aggression by NDC supporters, may lead to uncontrollable reactions, which could jeopardise national stability.
“NPP supporters have stood firm in the interest of peace and democracy, but our patience is being tested. We will firmly defend ourselves against any attack on us or our members,” Mr. Mustapha cautioned.
He mentioned mayhem visited on the homes of Madam Ursula Owusu-Ekuful, the MP for Ablekuma West; NPP MP for Tolon, NADMO Offices, warehouses of the national School Feeding Programme, and Agric Office in Tamale.
Some constituency collation centres that witnessed violent attacks were, Aowin, Damongo, Techiman South, Ahafo Ano South West, Obuasi East, Ahafo Ano North, Gushegu, Karaga, and Kpandai.
The rest were, Fanteakwa North, Akwatia, Suhum, Nsawam Adoagyiri, Tema Central, Ablekuma North, Okaikwei Central, and Dome Kwabenya.
Mr Mustapha, noted that elections were not justification for violence or division and underscored the need to work together to maintain the peace and stability of the country.
“We appeal to all Ghanaians to remember that we are one nation with a shared destiny, Let us all work together to maintain the peace and stability that have been the hallmark of our democracy,” Mr. Mustapha stated.
Mob Attack District Assembly
In a related development, a mob numbering about 100, believed to be supporters of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), have besieged the premises of the Kadjebi District Assembly in the Oti region and attacked staff of the Assembly.
The Ghana News Agency (GNA) sources disclosed that, the ‘giant’ men, who attacked the Assembly staff were led by Mr. Ahmed Muniru (AKA Orinzo), NDC Parliamentary Candidate aspirant, who contested the primary in 2023, but lost to Mr. Yao Gomado, the MP for Akan.
The group alleged that their intelligence shows Mr. Wilson Kwami Agbanyo and Assembly staff, were evacuating Assembly property and their action was to stop the suspected loot.
The swift intervention by the Ghana Police Service led by Superintendent (Supt) Frank Nana Asomaning, the Kadjebi District Commander and his team, calmed down tempers.
He engaged the group and urged them to refrain from acts that could lead to mayhem and loss of life and later met the District Co-ordinating Director, Mr Cletus Chevure, to reach an understanding.
Police, have maintained presence at the Assembly to protect state property. The DCE’s Residence suffered a similar attack on Saturday.
