Junior Speller Contest Reaches Semi-Finals

The quarter finals of the annual spelling competition designed for basic and junior high schools, has been held in Accra.

The programme, dubbed ‘Junior Speller’, which tests the spelling prowess of pupils from Class One to Nine, was held at the Methodist University College in Dansoman, Accra.

This year, schools and pupils from Ashanti, Central and Greater Accra Regions, enrolled aside the individual registrations.

The annual programme started some four years ago.

The 1st and 2nd editions were held in selected schools in the Ablekuma West municipality, in Accra.

But the 3rd edition, The Anchor was informed, opened for individual registration through its website.

That interestingly, resulted in pupils registering from Ashanti, Eastern, Central, and Volta Regions.

Junior Speller, which is gradually becoming a household name, begins with audition or internal spelling bee, quarter finals, semi-finals and the grand finale.

The competition has been put into two categories, namely; basic 1 to 4 and 5 to 9.

According to the Public Relations Officer (PRO) of Born Heroes Foundation, organizers of the competition, Ruth Ampiaw, there has been 13 quarter finals; seven in Accra, six in Kumasi already

There will also be about four to eight semi-finals this month and October before the grand finale later in December.

Junior Speller is telecast on Joyprime at 10am on Saturdays and on GNTV Junior at 4pm and repeated on Tuesdays at 5pm.

The educative programme, is founded by Victor Osei Nkansah and has Samuel Essah from the Ghana Broadcasting Corporation (GBC) as pronouncer.
