Alex Mould Grinds Pepper For NDC Running Mate Job
Mr. Alex Kofi Mensah Mould, a former Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Ghana National Petroleum Company (GNPC), appears to be leaving no stone unturned to become the running mate of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC)in the 2024 general elections at all cost.
Mr.Mould, who for a long time has been schemingfor the spot, was spotted in a photograph, grinding hot pepper for early morning fufu in the Ashanti Region,in franticpursuit to win the heart of the party and snatch the slot from Professor Naana Jane Opoku Agyeman, his main contender.
The fufu episode, according to the younger brother of the former Minister of Education, Betty Mould-Idrissu, happened at Asante Akyem.
He was in the region recently for the branch registration exercise of the opposition NDC ahead of its constituency, regional, national and presidential primary expected to take place between now and next year.
The Anchor has gathered that, though Mr.Mould is partly from the Ashanti Region, yet, unlike his elder sister,Mrs.Mould-Idrissu, who is well-known in the region as an indigene, same cannot be said of him.
Mr.Mould is said to have apparently lived all his life in either Accra, where their father comes from, or outside the shores of Ghana.
This appears to be causing a lot of disaffection for him in his mother’s region and the party in particular. He is mostly viewed as an outsider, even though he is very much an Ashanti.
He has never proudly spoken the Ashanti Twi or the Akan dialect, as he often opts to speak English on most Akan-speaking media platforms.
Indeed, during his tour of the region last month, Mr.Mould captioned his visit as ‘Life of a City Boy’ while giving details of his daily activities as far as the monitoring of the branch registration exercise was concerned.
While staying at Ejuratia, near Mamponteng in the AfigyaKwabre South District, where their mother hails from, Mr.Mould paid working visits to some villages, namely Mpobi, Ankaase, Hemang and Wawaase and some cocoa farms, to experience a typical village life.
While sharing his experience and telling the difference between fufu prepared in the national capital and the one from the villages in the Ashanti Region, Mr.Mould told his friends and followers on social media “Accra fufu is overrated!
“The fufu I had this morning at Asante Akyem, during my branch registration monitoring, was serious. Kaish!!!
“Grinding our own ginger, shallots and pepper for our soup and fufu. #BeCounted#NDCbranchRegistration”.
The Ashanti Region and the Eastern, two strongholds of the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP), are the only regions the NDC is yet to hold its branch executive elections.
Even though the one-time CEO of the National Petroleum Authority (NPA) has in recent years been tracing his roots back to the Ashanti Region, he is seen as doing so for a special purpose.
He is said to be interested in the vice-presidential spot of the party and looking forward to partnering former President John Mahama for the 2024 general elections.
The chemical engineer, together with a former Managing Director (MD) of BOST, Kingsley Kwame Awuah Darko, also an Ashanti, were rumoured to have been penciled down as leading contenders for the 2020 elections, before the decision to choose a former education minister, Prof. Naana Jane Opoku Agyeman.
Barely four years after that ambition eluded the two, he is back with his eyes still fixed on the ball, nurturing the quest to become the next vice president of Ghana, in the event that the NDC is successful in the general elections in 2024.
In fact, ahead of the 2020 general election, Mr. Mould, touted himself as the best qualified to be running mate toMr Mahama.
According to him, his successes in different sectors of the economy makes him the best candidate to be Vice President to John Mahama if elected into power.
“My pedigree shows that I have managed organisations successfully… if you’re talking about the economy, of course, I can deliver. If you’re talking about energy, I can deliver. If you are talking about any area whether its trade, industry, I can deliver.”
Speaking in an interview on JoyNews in May 2020, Alex Mould believed he was the right person to match the current Vice President if given the nod to partner John Mahama in the 2020 presidential elections.
“The flagbearer has to work with the Functional Executives of the party in consultation with the elders and come up with a criteria. If they call me and nominate me and I pass the criteria, I definitely will accept it,” he said.
Mr.Mould, who holds several certificates, degrees and positions within and outside the country, was also the executive director and co-head of the Wholesale Department of Standard Chartered Bank, Ghana, before his appointment into public office and now joining politics proper.
