Police Inspector Interdicted For Handcuffing Man Over GH₵2 Apio Debt

Kenney Mantey Ampofo, a police inspector with the Sampa District Police Command in the Bono Region, has been interdicted by the police administration.

The officer’s interdiction happened, after he reportedly handcuffed his victim, who owed him a GH₵2 debt,without taking him through the necessary process.

Frank Kofi Adu could not pay in full a GH₵4 worth of alcohol he and his friend purchased from the police inspector, who operates a drinking spot.

A statement from the Bono Region acting Head of Public Affairs,dated February 3, 2023 and signed by Superintendent of Police, Patrick Okai Kodjoe, said the inspector has since been referred to the Police Professional Standards Bureau (PPSB) for further investigation.

“The said Police Inspector has been referred to the Police Processional Standards Bureau (PPSB) to allow for thorough investigation into the matter,” the police said.

According to reports, two friends, including the victim, had visited a drinking spot belonging to the embattled police officer for some alcohol.

But after they consumed the alcoholic substance, suspected to be dry gin, popularly known as akpeteshie or apio, the two friends could not raise the GHc4 being the cost.

Frank at this stage pleaded that the inspector takes half of the debt, while he goes to the house to get the remainder for settlement.

But before the police inspector will agree to let him leave, he allegedly handcuffed him before proceeding to the house for the money.

Interestingly, the victim, Kofi Frank, said, upon his return, the officer was nowhere to be found. He claimed that all attempts to contact the officer to set him free proved futile.

According to him, he proceeded to the police station to have the handcuffs removed, but here, too, he was unsuccessful.

His inability to have the handcuffs removed on time ended in endless pain, resulting in swollen hands.

This incident comes barely a week, after another Inspector Sulemana Adam in Takoradi, was also interdicted for leaving his rifle in a public bus (trotro), after he reportedly took a GHc100 bribe from the driver. He has also been referred to PPSB.
