Mahama’s Son Ditches Soccer For Politics

Sharaf Mahama, the son of former President John Dramani Mahama, who is a professional footballer plying his trade in Europe, has ditched soccerfor active politics.

Former president Mahama, who is staging a comeback after his defeat in two successive elections-2016 and 2020 -, is, on the quiet, cleverly introducing his son, Sharaf, to politics, ostensibly for public office in future.

The young man, for sometime now, has been following his father to several social events, as well as campaign tours, especially this year, giving the impression that the NDC presidential aspirantis grooming his son for future political activities.

The Anchor has observed, the last time Mr. Mahama had a very close family member in his government or close to him was the appointment of lawyer Joyce Bawa Mogtari, as Deputy Transport Minister, who is now an aide to him.

The young man is a known footballer, who until recently plied his trade abroad.

Sharaf formerly played for Rostocker FC in Germany as a striker. It is unclear what has become of his career as a footballer.

While the question remains unanswered, the former President has been attending almost every event with Sharaf, his third son and a lookalike of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) 2023 presidential aspirant.

The Anchor has been monitoring with suspicion Mr. Mahama’s inclusion of his son in his ongoing campaign tour of the country, ahead of the party’s presidential primaries slated for May 13, this year.

It is the first time he is hitting the campaign trail with any of his sons even though, in the past, he was attending events with his only daughter, Farida.

During his tour of the Ashanti Region last month, Sharaf was spotted with his father, who has just one term of four years in the event that he wins the next general election.

He shared the high time with various party bigwigs, dignitaries, including the campaign manager for the former President, Professor Joshua Alabi, and other members of the campaign team.

From some of the pictures sighted by this paper, Sharaf did not only sit with those who matter in the Central Region, but he was seen with his father sharing pleasantries with party foot soldiers, including children.

Video of him watching keenly how the campaign was being conducted. Mr. Mahama has not only been touring the country with his son. He has been attending several social events with his son.

At the funeral of the late footballer, Christian Atsu Twasam, who met his untimely death during a 7.8-magnitude earthquake that rocked Turkey and Syria on February 6, killing more than 54,000 people in both countries, Mr. Mahama attended the event with his son.

He attended the funeral with his father, as well as the former Chief of Staff, Julius Debrah, and many others, clad in all black outfits.

Sharaf was also seen in pictures with his father when musician Kojo Antwi and former world boxing champion, BerimaAzumah Nelson, paid a visit to the former President to announce the demise of his father and mother respectively.

In a Facebook post, Mr. Mahama shared pictures with the two legends, together with Mr,Debrah, musician Rex Omar and others, as well as Sharaf.

In the post, Mr. Mahama wrote: “My sincerest condolences to my friends, ‘Professor’ Azumah Nelson for the loss of his mother and Musician Kojo Antwi who has lost his father.

“It was an honour to receive them and their families at our residence. Lordina and I once again express our condolences to them. May their souls rest in peace.”

Sharaf also accompanied Mr. Mahama to the final funeral rites of the late Mary Badu, mother of the former national chairman of the NDC, Samuel Ofosu Ampofo.
