Alan’s Man Quits Ketu North MP Race

The chief executive officer (CEO) of the Bui Power Authority (BPA), Dr. Samuel Kofi Ahiave Dzamesi, who was vying to be the New Patriotic Party (NPP) parliamentary candidate for the Ketu North constituency in the Volta Region, has strangely withdrawn from the race.

The withdrawal by Kofi Dzamesi, who was a leading member of the campaign team of former Trade and Industry minister, Alan John Kwadwo Kyerematen, comes in the wake of a similar move by his boss.

A letter sighted by The Anchor, from the office of the former Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs Minister, addressed to the party’s election committee, headed by Professor Mike Aaron Ocquaye, showed he abandoned the ship, long before his boss’s shocking withdrawal from the presidential race last Tuesday.

The letter, dated August 12, 2023, said, as he paves the way, he was very hopeful that the NPP would benefit greatly from new faces and fresh perspectives.

He maintained that he had decided, on personal grounds and after due consideration and consultation, not to contest as an aspirant in the constituency, which is one of the orphan seats that the NPP is working to conduct election for.

“My records at the Ketu North constituency reflect my strong commitment to support and defend the party, as I fought to protect and administer the party’s interest to winning the heart of the constituents over the past thirty (30) years. I have always been deeply committed to serving our party and striving to make a positive impact in the lives of our fellow citizens.

“I therefore write to officially inform you that I have withdrawn from the Parliamentary Candidacy race for the NPP in the Ketu North Constituency. I hereby call for a united front to support the candidate whom we believe can best represent our interests and work tirelessly for the progress of our party in the constituency,” he stated.

The former Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs minister also revealed that the decision to pull out was on personal terms, “coupled with considerations and consultations not to contest for the Parliamentary Candidature of the great NPP for Ketu North this time around.”

He added, “Your belief in my political vitality and dedication to the betterment of our party has been a driving force in my endeavours. I deeply appreciate the resilience in the trust you have for me from the regional hierarchy of the party to the constituency and down to the polling station levels.

“I therefore write to officially inform you that I have withdrawn from the Parliamentary Candidacy race for the NPP in the Ketu North Constituency.”

It is unclear how many people have picked forms to contest for the Ketu North constituency seat, which has traditionally been occupied by the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC).

The Anchor gathered that one Gabriel Kwasi Awudi, the former constituency chairman of the party is in the race.

Meanwhile, the NPP yesterday Sunday August 10, organized acclamations for some orphan constituencies in the Greater Accra Region.

According to the regional chairman, Divine Otoo Agorhom, constituencies such as Ada, La Dadekotopon and Tema East, which are being occupied by the NDC, are first to have their respective parliamentary candidates, ahead of the main primaries for orphan seats across the country.

Speaking to CitiNews, Mr. Agorhom said the party is hoping to grab the Tema seat, which used to be a traditional seat of the NPP, but was snatched by a former Tema Metropolitan Assembly (TMA) Mayor, Isaac Ashai Odamten, in 2020, due to confusion.

Ahead of the acclamation, the regional chairman said it is also possible to snatch the Ada seat and also the La Dadekotopon’s, assuring party members to expect a surprise in the next general election, as far as that seat is concerned.
